If the budget is too tight for 414's, your best choices are 4050 (~$300 on ebay) or AE3000 (which i've succesfuly used for both OH and guitar cab). I'd also ne curious anout the Sennheiser MK, anyone used it?

Mike,

I have, and use regularly the AT2035 and AT2050, I am quite  happy with them for guitar amps, drum overheads, as well as voice over recording for theatrical shows I design. I can only imagine  the 4040 would sound a little nicer, I would go with them.

p.s. I too have a Heil PR30 that I like putting on guitar amps as well as voice overs.

I used some just this last weekend. I was happy with what I got out of them considering the last time I used them was mixing monitors for a metal band that had them on all the drums. Just before sound check the drummer asked me to make his kit sound like a "type writer with gates". So sad......

Im not really interested in Heil though, thanks Don.

Have you tried any of Heils Mics Mike....The PR 30/40 is as good as any Ive used them for everything from recording to live guitar, percussion, overheads, cymbals, piano, very loud and soft programs etc, check them out...

i Have Been Mixing with SAC for YEARS now and i will not go out on a gig without it. no snake, 72 mic pres, 72 outputs, 3x24" touchscreens, 72 channel multitrack recording/128 playback, 26 wireless tablets can mix simultaneously,  24 stereo monitor CONSOLES not just a monitor mix from an aux, each monitor "mix has independent eq, dynamics, effects etc. all for right around the same price as ONE sc46, M7 or iLive...

I got to mix on the Vi 6 a couple times and I demo'd the SI 32 compact. great consoles. the VI 6 is really expensive. I'm not kidding I think A&H got it right on this one. It blows the Yamaha out of the water sonically,  it's more inputs than the SC48 and you get the digital snake. It's a no brainer.

I've never minded layers and the Vi stuff keeps a LOT of info right in front of you and sounds good as well.  More detail is instantly avaiable.  I use the Vi4 box for my 1-48 channels and use the 32 onboard converters for local stuff.  Local 1-16 become console 49-64 for playback, MC, etc.  Local 17-32 become the returns for any analog inserts.  Outputs are all at the box leaving me the local stuff for my insert outs.  Lex and Brooks processing.  Cost us around 38k with the box.  Not cheap but very happening.

I saw a 75 minute demo in person and asked a few questions but no hands on.  Took delivery on a Tuesday and cabled it up and made sure it was working in place.  Came in and messed around on Wednesday for a fewto do some configuration and minor "test drive".  I then did 3 nights worth of one offs without ever opening the manual or messing with the offline editor and had no problem operatiing in a way that was quickly comfortable.  A couple of gripes but small ones that will disappear after a while.  Did I mention that it sounds good?!.  I'll just ignore the "Made in China" stickers on the PSUs!

I have been tooling around on a Vi6 for a few weeks and used it last week with a midas guy who had been on it once before , we worked for 2 days with it and he was very happy.  I think the desk is great sounding and all the processing is top notch. The surface makes learning fast! About the only thing I had to work out was the insert section for auxs ect. I just got a digi  venue mix rack with  the full pro tools package as well very nice! and am looking at the Vi as another digital desk to add to our stock here. I had a I live last year for a while and liked it the whole system is well thought out. W see all the desks come through our Halls and think the Vi is very nice , and seeing on a lot of riders now, I just wish you coud get more stereo outs seems funny to say but some of the broadway shows need a over the 35 mono outs it tops out at. For just about anything else the Vi6 is ready. I really like the user levels that let you assemble ins and outs as you need or like. I had fun with the output section having the effects returns mixed with band and lead vox VCA's
