"That's what I thought as well.  It seems logical though for someone to make an EQ where the lowest and highest band act as shelves so as to tame subsonic frequencies...  unless they already exist and I just don't know about them."

Everyone knows how a 31 band EQ works right? In thinking about a damaged driver situation this evening, a though occurred to me:Are the 20Hz and 20kHz bands 1/3rd oct. like the rest or are they high/low shelves?  I can think of potential uses for both, and perhaps some models differ from others in this regard, but I've never actually heard specifically one way or the other.  On one hand, why would one take such care in EQing a system and they say "screw it" to frequencies below 20Hz... On the…See More

"Thanks for the reply. When I think of Metallica, I envision plenty of content down at 30Hz. I've never hung an array of that size before, but I always thought that by time you hit half a wave length of what you can steer with a line source, you…"

"How do keep the massive low end off the stage? If you are hanging the subs in columns of 10 and each sub is 22.5 inches tall, that would make the hang roughly 19 feet tall correct?  If so, you would only get the point-source effect necessary to…"

Hi Joe, sorry for the deley in reply, I do not check this site that often.
I think instead of point-source you mean line source. When thinking about line sources, wave length and array length are related, but it is not a relation ship when a 3.4m length array will only beam down to 100 Hz (wavelength of 100 Hz is 3.4m), but it will continue doing so bellow that as well, but loosing the efficiency as going away from that frequency.
In the example in the question, a 19 feet tall array (around 5.8m, that is the wavelength of around 59 Hz)  will beam energy down to 59 Hz, but it does not stop there, it will beam energy bellow that as well  but less efficiently. At 59 Hz we have a strong directivity, at 45 Hz, it is less, but still effective and at 29.5 Hz, it will still have it, but a lot less effective. Still, there is reduction of energy bellow and above the array.
The actual result also depends on the physical position of the array and the acoustical properties of the venue. This is why checking the energy at the audience and the stage using the TM array is always important during system tuning.
