"The big difference between the K and th KW is the wood box vs. the plastic. If your going to throw them around a bunch I'd go with the wood just for the ruggedness of the wood box."

First console?

Posted on May 31, 2011 at 11:33am 29 Comments

I was just looking at an old blog about what old gear did you "Cut your teeth on" I want to narrow it down and ask.  What was your first console? I'm going to skip over the Sunn power mixer I had when I was 14. The first console I did  a Professional gig on was an old Black faced Allen & Heath 24-4-2. I did monitors for Charlie Pride, it was a one off.  The guy I worked for had one for front of house and a factory modified one that was a 24x 8 monitor desk. We out boarded the power supply… Continue

Analog world

There's a bunch of good stuff on the Analog world group. But it seems to be mostly discussions about digital consoles. I suggested changing the name to " Analog guy's going kicking and screaming into a digital world" Anyway It occurred to me that the major players in the console manufacturing business aren't doing any development in analog. They are dropping analog product, Midas is still making the H3000, APB is making a 56ch large format console, Yamaha doesn't have a real contender in a… Continue

The Educated Engineer

Ok I don’t want to offend anyone, or discredit the school of “Hard Knocks” BUT How many of you out there have a degree pertaining to Audio Engineering? I’m the first person to graduate from the Indiana University School of Music with  a degree in Audio Engineering. Other disciplines like telecom, radio, electrical engineering, technical theater etc. would apply. I was out on the Billy Joel Storm Front tour and a bunch of us were sitting around waiting for sound check and the topic of…

Personal Monitor systems

Posted on May 14, 2011 at 7:14am 3 Comments

I was wondering if anyone out there has been using personal monitor systems in a live or touring setting? Like the Aviom or Hear systems, or just small mixers with splitters. Yamaha has an Aviom Card for their digital desks and The Roland M400 mixing system has a proprietary mixer. I’ve seen some others.

I’ve used them in permanent installs in churches, with great success I might add. But has anyone been touring with them, and how are you using them?… Continue

50 sounds almost plausible - I'll go back to the gift shop and see if they have any virtual medicine or a +10dB shelf @ 6k.  What's your schedule like this week - I'll be hitching the team and heading to the mercantile for sundries (molasses, salt-pork, calico - the usual) - we could meet at the trough, gum our way through some hamsteaks, and it wouldn't take all week to have a 5 minute conversation like it does on these typewriters.

Ted?  Is that really you?  I think the real Ted would be using all caps and lots of exclamation points.  I was going to attach a gift to this comment - maybe the ice cream, maybe the bear - but as you're obviously not the real Ted, no virtual gifts for you....

Hello Ted ! It's good to hear from you! I'm still doing design/consulting work, and mostly doing live-to-tape shows like the Superbowl, American Music Awards, TV specials etc......

Are you still Touring? I haven't worked a Tour since 2001.

And for a little extra sizzle, we added the JBL ring radiator (aka bullet) tweeters, or the JBL slot radiator (aka Prism) tweeters. Guys with really low budgets used a big bank of motorola plastic piezos. Now that was painful!
