Logistics & Venues. Magic?

I take a moment from my usual work of conjuring fully-formed events out of thin air and making them disappear by "magic" (actually a top-secret anti-gravitational formula that we'll be offering an IPO on later this year but a reminder that a sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic).

There is a challenge afflicting several venues around town -- the "incredible magical disappearing event" problem.  Particularly when an event requires a day or so of building,…

recording guys mixing live sound

I understand their hearing, developed under best practices ,are probably better than mine. But I have had many such guys mix on a budget (time & gear) situation who displayed such an ego while butchering a mix! Band I play in our "sound guy" quit before an out door bike run. I set up,tuned and line checked band so this guy could waltz in and mix. He shows up RIGHT before show time and has no idea how the board works ! (Yamaha mg 32/14) He procedes to crank up every input gain and gets a…

BLAST FROM THE PAST PHOTO

Here’s a shot of Donna Summer from a vintage Sennheiser ad, where she’s singing into an MD-421. The 421 is a classic choice on toms, kick drum and guitar cabinets—as well as a popular voice mic with DJs and broadcasters—and even The Beatles occasionally sang into stand-mounted 421s onstage. I thought I had seen…

Bad Production. Soundguy as Event Manager. Saying NO.

As prices continue to rise for food and fuel, we're beginning to look at another round of price hikes to keep pace.  The bottom line is that good people need to make a living wage in order to walk into a room the next day and, as a manager, my job is to make sure that those good people are available and enthusiastic for my clients.

As a small business that works with a large number of small clients, raising prices is simply hard.  But when I look at the overall investment that my…

My Board Turtle

Sometimes you have that one item that you always have with you to remember something or someone.

Well, here is my “board turtle” Slappy. I have had this thing around for about seven years and I always place this turtle (bathtub/pool toy) at the head of the console that I happen to be working on. It was given to me by a dear friend as a gag-gift and one of the last things that he ever said to me was, “Remember that every problem is solvable and…

Sunday Morning Rant

Ahhhhhh, spring.  And a boys thoughts turn to.....events!

In the last four weeks I've seen successes and debacles across a variety of events and venues and this rant may be a way to get it out of my head and give you some food for thought.
First off, if your event is important, WHY is it that the overriding concern is the upfront cost of being seen and heard.  These are NOT the negotiating points: "I want to be half seen!" just doesn't often come up much.  No, these are the…

When doing a sound check, ditch the headgear.

I have now had two engineers in a row come in to my venue and each of them fight with the monitors for almost an hour before doing a sound check with the band. Now, its not that the monitors are not taken care of and are broken in any way, or that they are not adequate. They are dual 15" woofer with a 4" compression horn and you could flip these around and use them for mains if you really wanted to (no joke). Heading back to the battle with the monitors.... The engineer walks off the bus in…

Small Choir Mikking

Hello,

My venue is hosting a gospel concert and I was presented with the challenge of miking a 9 piece choire divided into 3 sections. See picture bleow. As you can see, the back line is up stage right. The lead vocals are down center stage. The choir is behind the singer and Stage left of the backline.

I'm thinking the challenge is that I want to use small condensor 4040s and such on the choir but that there

1.) May be too much bleed from the back line…

The Blame Game

Today they plan on releasing the findings in regards to the stage collapse in Indianapolis. Looks as if the blame will fall on the Local. I could go on and on about the fact that the Local is the wrong group to place the blame on but I think we are all smart enough to know this is BS from the word go, but instead I would like to ask each one of us to stop and think for a moment the impact this can have.

For those readers who are in right to work states it…

The dumbing down of Pro Audio...

Here's a quote,  published in the January 2012 edition of  'Front of House' magazine:

"right now we have an extremely powerful brand that people recognize and value, but the musical instrument category is inherently limited because people who purchase instruments also need to know how to play them.   This new division...allows us access to 20 in 20 consumers, instead of the one in 20 we currently hit."

This is Gibson's CEO, Henry Juszkiewicz, talking about the…

Happy New Year! still no DigiCo they won´t buy me...

Hi Folks,

Our little company´s been running a new circus show since October, thought I´d share a couple of pictures of our exotica- have banjo, and "bowling" too!  The Bunny by the control station looks pretty much like the operator by now... 70 shows later.

Take Care of those irrational people we call musicians, and all the best for 2012 from the seemingly eternal darkness we call the Winter in Finland!…
